Wolfram, NKS and lot of books
Culture, General, ScienceCaused by an intensive (yet, sadly, fruitless) use of Wolfram|Alpha1 I recently came upon the strange phenomena duped NKS and its inventor2 and main proponent Stephen Wolfram. What a strange character.
(more…)- Tell me any other tool that can answer important questions like this? [↩]
- I’ve read several accusations of Stephen Wolfram stealing ideas; at least one can say he did not properly address previous work in that direction [↩]

Detexify
ScienceDecades of research finally come to fruition. There is a pretty handy tool named Detexify out there. What it does is simple but efficient. You draw some symbols on a dedicated area and the systems gives you a ranking of LaTeX-symbols (including the commands that generate them) which are visually related to your input. The most time-saving tool I’ve every used while working with LaTeX and its consorts.

Computer Science?
ScienceWe named our blog Science & Code for a reason (and I am not talking about the first name initially proposed by Michael): it captures the big ambivalence of our field of study. Many scientists do not regard Computer Science as a science but an engineering discipline — something I can only partly disagree with but which I nevertheless oppose strongly. The beauty of our field lies in its diversity, it affects about every scientific, economical or medical field there is. But this very diversity also makes it virtually impossible to convey a coherent picture of Computer Science, something we all know from trying to tell our family/friends what we are actually doing (my short answer to that is usually: “Math.”, but that is again only partly right).

Watch banana-guy being thick
Culture, ScienceI just found this gem via the Atheist Media Blog — be advised, this is painful to watch:
Phew, that’s a lot of bullshit crammed into nine minutes! I was especially dumbstruck by his “evolution of a female counterpart”. Not that I haven’t heard it already: the same ‘argument’ can be found on his blog “Atheist Central”. But until now I sincerely believed that this blog is some kind of honey-pot, a place where he can harvest aggressive or ignorant comments from (supposed) atheists for his new book. (more…)
